YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR FORTUNE!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

It is with much joy and gratitude that I am now recuperating at home after spending 10 days at Scripp’s Memorial Hospital, Encinitas, CA. I was diagnosed with complications and pneumonia necessitating I.V.s and oxygen 24-7.

Without going into all the gory details, I feel like I am a far different woman than I was at the beginning of the month. I am much more pro-active where my health is concerned, which the hospital encourages its patients to be. I kept a daily Journal of everything that transpired… the good, bad and the ugly! Hence, you will see some articles from me that are both humorous and poignant.

The articles will offer tips to folks faced with an emergency hospital stay, what to take with you, who to notify, etc. Also, pointers on “How to Behave When Visiting Someone in the Hospital!” Yes, believe it or not, many folks don’t have a clue how to act when visiting a hospital! Some of my suggestions are being forwarded to the head of Scripps in the hopes that some much needed changes will take place for the betterment of patients!

For now, I am ecstatic for the health that I have. I realize I can handle any difficulty/problem or stress if I have good health. Health to me is more important than money, relationships or talent. I can go anywhere in the world and enjoy new sights, sounds, spices and savor the experiences when I have good health. Without good health, I am nothing… a shadow of my former self, perhaps even dependent on the good will of others to care for me…

Folks, take care of yourselves and be pro-active when it comes to your health… you’ll be glad you did!

“YOU’RE A NATIONAL TREASURE!”

By Shirley M. Carolan

Recently I addressed the Women’s Aviara Club in Carlsbad, California.  The original invitation was for March but unfortunately I had a nasty accident where I “kissed the ground” again  and ended up with a fractured nose, and multiple cuts and bruises, resulting in my looking like a giant panda, and having to cancel the engagement.

Last week when I arrived at the speaking engagement  facility I discovered to my horror that I had left all my notes behind!   My first reaction was akin to panic, even though I had rehearsed repeatedly that day, and even days before, what I was going to say.  Next, I told myself to stay calm because I had a good message to deliver, and a nice gift for them.

As their business meeting progressed, I quickly made some notes of the key points and stories I wanted to cover.  Fortunately, I had arrived early, and had spoken to several women before things got underway and who warmed up to me when I told them who I was.  When they heard the title of my speech was “Life Is A Firewalk” they were even more intrigued.

Once I was introduced by the president, Nancy Conti, (an introduction I had written earlier for her) my adrenalin, and 27 years ooastmasters International experience kicked in!  I was able to tie in how my first firewalk, in 1989, with Tony Robbins changed my life!  I was 56 years old at the time.  I explained how we all have a “firewalk” to overcome in our lives, whether that be the loss of a relationship, family member, job, home, pet, etc.  That then becomes our “story.”

Our “story” becomes how we live our lives!  The stories I selected to share were powerful and personal:  the women in jail that I taught and got permission from the Sheriff’s Dept., ROP, and the San Mateo County Bd. Of Education, to teach some Tony Robbins skills.  How we can live in two different time zones simultaneously, as I did when my family and I emigrated from England to the United States but I left one foot back in England and only had one foot here!  How living in the past can zap our energy and impede us from living life fully!  I think you get the message.

I did not hold back anything that I felt would serve the goal of showing these women how to overcome any adversity that life throws us.  I explained how  “Journalling” has helped me to overcome many adversities, including loss of a job, a fractured back, and an escalating mortgage all in the same year!  I shared who my heroes are and why I enjoy teaching “Journaling for Success” workshops.

Right in the middle of my presentation a woman yelled out “You’re a National Treasure!”  Now I know I’m only 75 years old but I’ve never been called a “National Treasure!”  This woman inadvertently made my day!  They loved it when they found out I had a website and two blogs, they I’m an avid oil painter and pet lover.  As a result, I am mulling over my priorities.  Have I missed my calling?

SUMMER ENDS WITH A BANG!

By Shirley M. Carolan

This year I will not be sorry to see summer come to a close.  I never thought I’d ever say that but for me, this year, it’s true.  August was a very busy month and took up a lot of time and energy doing press releases for several professional organizations to which I belong.

Also, I started a paper newsletter for my Carlsbad Tick Talk Toastmaster Club, coming up with a title, the “Tick Talk Tatler.”  Designing, and laying out columns reflecting the diversity of our club has also been a challenge.   I’ve initiated a column entitled “Toastmasters on the Go!” to honor those Toastmasters who are using their public speaking. writing and leadership skills beyond the club level.  However, I think the challenge and time expended will pay off for our club in attracting new members, and rewarding current ones.  It’s really a great public relations tool and a labor of love!

The Labor Day weekend will see the first annual Village Faire Art Festival, co-sponsored by the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League, of which I am VP of Public Relations.  I wrote several newspaper press releases on this event as well as delivering flyers to various businesses around town.  It promises to be a popular attraction because there is something for every age group.  Families are particularly welcome.  There will be a live model and live drawing and painting demonstrations.  Folks can buy art supplies at a small fee and participate in the fun.

Artists, using a variety of media, e.g., paints, watercolors, oils, acrylics, sculpture and photography will demonstrate their work and skills.  I will be sharing a booth with another artist and displaying some of my oil paintings on Saturday, August 30.

There will be live music throughout.  It is open to the public and is free.  So, come on down to the Carlsbad Village Faire Shopping Center at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad, from 10 AM to 4 PM both days and enjoy a fun Labor Day Weekend!

DOWNSIZING

By Shirley M. Carolan

Recently, I’ve had several phone calls asking me what happened to all the business services I used to offer on my website?  And, what happened to the wonderfully humorous book I wrote about my beloved Pug/Terrier Jake?

The answer is really quite simple.   After my accident on Palm Sunday, I had plenty of time to reflect on what is truly important in my life.  With an approaching 75th birthday on the horizon too, I realized it was even more important to use my energy wisely, cut down on the stress, and the marketing and cold calling, which I always hated, to eke out a living as a creative writer.

So, when a colleague said she would revamp my website I gave her carte blanch to do so.  Unfortunately, somehow the book, testimonials, contact page, etc. got lost in the shuffle.

My challenge now is to work with what I have and to be grateful for the God-given talents I have and enjoy them.  Speaking about the joys, and how to overcome the challenges of life, and mentoring, are a part of that process.  In fact, I have several speaking engagements lined up with professional organizations who want to hear that message.  While this may not pay the mortgage, at least I will be doing things that I love:  speaking, writing and mentoring.

This will also give me more time to devote to my oil painting.  The Carlsbad Oceanside Art League just featured a wonderful artist, Richard Stergulz, who demonstrated his unique painting style.  As a result, I’ve changed the way I handle my brush strokes and am creating work I never imagined possible.  I’ve signed up for his Fall workshop at the School of Arts in Fallbrook and can’t wait.

Richard’s website is www.stergulzart.com and registration is www.artcampusatfallbrook.com, or call 760-728-6383.

So, I have not dropped off the planet, I’m merely exercising my option to enjoy life more.  But, do contact  me if you have a special project you’d like me to handle.  Meanwhile, I am grateful to all the wonderful folks I have worked with and welcome their continued support!

“RE-INVESTING IN YOURSELF”

By Shirley M. Carolan

Do you re-invest in yourself? Do you keep up with new trends in the marketplace, hobbies, books, education, cultural events, etc? Regardless of my age, I’ve found that re-investing in myself pays dividends! It keeps me young, interesting to others, and makes life much more enjoyable.

Last week I turned 75 but I don’t feel it or even think that I am that age. It would be more accurate to say that I’m 75 going on 39, a la Jack Benny.

When I worked full time I made it a point to invest 10-20% of my income in my on-going education and self development. I attended seminars, workshops, bought books, records, albums and joined various organizations related to either my work or my hobbies. Consequently, investing in myself became a way of life. For example, I joined Toastmasters International in 1981 and am active in my club today! I’ve enjoyed mentoring both men and women and formed satisfying, personal relationships.

When I was 16 years old I represented my high school, Queen of the Rosary Academy, Amityville, New York, in the Long Island Oratorical Championships. Perhaps that is why Toastmasters is a natural for me today. In 1994 I made my professional stage debut in the British comedy “It Runs in the Family” by Ray Cooney at the Alterena Playhouse, Alameda, CA. Yes, I loved the English language both oral and written, and had a passion for words at an early age. Today, I use that passion in writing articles, workbooks, course material, ebooks as well as press releases for both Toastmasters and the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League!

Also, I enjoy oil painting, having taken lessons these last 7 years from Stephanie Travers of San Diego, and now exhibit my paintings at the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League. I could go on with many more examples but I think you get the message.

This is the best time to be retired, semi-retired, a senior citizen, baby boomer, or whatever age group you are in. There are so many opportunities for seniors to continue learning and enjoying life. I make use all of the following: Adult Ed classes, Community College extension classes, the library, Hewlett Packard on-line classes (particularly the Digital Camera class), Senior Centers, Learning Annex, webinars, Blogs, seminars, workshops, books, CDs, Amazon.com, hobby groups, self development groups, etc.

If you’ve stopped investing in yourself because you’re now retired, or semi-retired, and feel it doesn’t matter, think again.  If you are not taking advantage of all the wonderful opportunities out there you are missing the best part of life! Start re-investing in your happiness and growth today!

LESS IS MORE!

By Shirley M. Carolan

My new mantra this year is Less is More! It is such a simple concept, yet for years I have not practiced it. I’ve never been able to get enough of whatever I wanted more of! H’m, that doesn’t sound right.

As a result of this stubborn mentality, I find myself at the age of 75 literally loaded with clutter throughout my house. It’s not just the myriad files and paper that I’m afraid to get rid of, in case I need something again, it’s all the useless knick-knacks, cutezy rabbit collection, but, it’s also the clothes! Granted, I live in a doll’s house where there isn’t even a broom closet to store mops, brooms, etc. and forget about a walk-in closet like my last abode. Hence, you get some idea of the magnitude of visible clutter!

It’s one thing to be a “sales” freak but it’s another to be a hoarder too! Maybe they go hand in hand? I was going to take digital pictures of all the clutter and send them to Oprah and beg for help. But, as I clicked the shutter the batteries were too low. So, I said to myself “You’ve made the decision to get rid of the clutter now get on with it!”

Can you imagine being overjoyed at spending your 75th Birthday getting rid of clutter in your house? It felt like I was getting a gorilla off my back! Whew! How many times I said “I should have a garage sale and bring in some much needed money from all this stuff I’ve collected!” But I never have.

Originally, I intended to treat myself to a nice lunch at one of those posh Solano Beach restaurants, right off Coast Highway. Then a brainwave hit me. Why not get rid of that 3 drawer chest of draws with all those t-shirts, sweaters, and cardigans with each draw catering to a different color? That seemed like a smashing idea until I saw each draw was packed solid. H’m, that meant I had to get rid of some of the clothes. It was truly an agonizing decision on what to keep and what to give away, as memories flashed before me of when I had last worn that special piece.

Two hours later I was finally done with trying on and deciding what to keep and what to discard. Now, I had 3 piles of clothing before me. The “maybe” pile was the toughest to decide upon as I asked myself will I wear this again? Then I gradually inched the chest of draws out of the bedroom into the living room and finally to the front door. It was exhausting work but I was determined to prove to myself that I was serious about downsizing and committing to “Less is More!” Fortunately, my next door neighbor’s son-in-law was visiting and pruning some bushes. I asked him would he help me get the chest of draws out to the curbside, since this was garbage pick-up day and I was revamping my home. Fortunately, he was willing to help. Ah, sweet succes! I was beginning to feel lighter in spirit too!

Today, Welcome Home Ministries and Brother Beno’s are going to be the recipients of all my “stuff” including that new Epsom printer, scanner, copier that uses up too much ink too quickly. Gee, that makes me feel good knowing I can help others less fortunate than me! It’s just like recycling! And if I want better things in my life then I must make room for them to come in! Wow, this is a win-win situation!

The trunk of my car is now loaded up with the first round of donations. I figure if I work at my clutter for one hour a day I can be clutter free within the year, providing I am conscientious and don’t bring in any more unnecessary items into the house, from food, magazines, clothing, to whatever! Did I tell you that my freezer and refrigerator are chock block full too? Now that’s a goal worth striving to reach. Yes, less is definitely more!

WHAT’S NEW?

Two major projects are taking up my time right now.

1.  Recently I received several phone calls about my “Journaling For Success” classes.  Yes, I am going to conduct them again!  I am looking for an appropriate meeting room to hold these classes.  I want it to be easily accessible from a freeway.  Also, I want to keep the fee down and so want to find a venue that will pick up the insurance, in case of accident or injury.  If you know of any places I might check out please contact me immediately, either by phone (760) 732-0663 or email:  artistwithaflair@att.net!

2.  I am in the throes of combining several of my blog articles with other unpublished articles I’ve written and am creating an “inspirational/motivational” book for women over 40 to read, enjoy, and start making better choices for their life styles.  The baby boomers will definitely benefit from it.   It will start with my first “Firewalk” with Tony Robbins in San Francisco when I was 56 years old and how it changed my life right up until I’m ready for Eternal Hills, together with the ashes of my little Pug/Terrier “Jake.”

Stay tuned for more! Two major projects are taking up my time right now.

POSITIVE ENERGY HEALS!

We’ve all been around folks who are not very happy, either with themselves, or with life.  As a result, we can often get sucked into their negative energy (aura) and start feeling down too, if we are not careful, or are unaware of what’s happening.

How refreshing it is then, to meet someone with a positive attitude, no hidden agenda, and a joy for life!  Just being around someone like this is a blessing!  One quickly forgets what might not be working in one’s life when we encounter someone with a joie de vivre !   Our energy is improved and so is our outlook.  We literally savor the experience.

The latter happened to me recently when I ventured out to meet the public for the first time, after a dreadful accident almost 4 weeks prior, when I had a nasty fall, smashing my face, breaking my nose, and pulling some tendons in hands and legs and ended up in an ambulance being rushed to the local hospital.  The fact that the huge black and purple circles around my eyes were still visible troubled me.   I still had quite a swollen lip, my teeth hurt, and the skin was pulling all down the left side of my face so I had to forego makeup.   That also bothered me.  I hadn’t left the house without makeup since my pre-teen years and now I was a septuagenarian!  I remember vividly asking the E/R doctor how I looked because I am quite vain, and there were no mirrors around, and he said “beautiful!”  H’m.  This guy was in the wrong profession!

But, as fate would have it, it was my turn to “sit the gallery. “   I’m a member of the Carlsbad Oceanside Art Leauge (COAL) and part of our dues, if we hang a painting at the gallery, is to pay a small hanging fee and sit the gallery for one session.  Officers are exempt from sitting (the gallery), and, being an officer (Publicity Chairperson) I could easily have passed on this.  However, I love to meet and talk to the public, find out what they are interested in, which paintings, sculptures, photos, etc. appeal to them and why.  I love it when folks come in from other parts of the country too and I get to know what it’s like to live in another state or region.

This was the scenario two weeks ago when it was my turn to sit the gallery.  I was settled in at the front desk when in bounced these two women.  They whizzed through the gallery and returned to the section reserved for the “Artist of the Month” exhibition.   This month it was a famous watercolor artist.  They were in animated conversation when in worked the artist in the flesh!  Apparently the three were friends.

After a few minutes I heard one woman say “I’ll take that one!  My husband will love it too.”  Hello, was I experiencing a fantastic sale so early in the day or, was it a joke?    Further conversation ensued and I heard the woman say I just love this “Phoenix and the Mission” watercolor. Sure enough the woman was serious and I got to write up the purchase.

As I completed the paperwork I congratulated her, and asked her where she intended to hang the painting.  She smiled, a bit sheepishly, and said that she had lost her house and all her belongings in the wildfires last fall in Fallbrook and that she had nowhere to hang it at the moment.  Again, I took in a deep breath as I weighed the situation.  This was pretty heady stuff.   The painting was quite expensive, just under a thousand dollars and the buyer didn’t even have a wall to hang it on!

H’m what to do …  I quickly called the Gallery Manager and asked him where they kept the “sold” stickers at the gallery.   Whereupon he told me the client could take the painting with her once it was paid for.   Then I told him the dilemma and there was a pregnant pause at his end.  It was agreed the client could leave the painting at the gallery until the end of the month when a new exhibition would take over.  I quickly made up a “sold” sign for her and placed it on the painting.  The woman was overjoyed with her purchase, just like a kid in a candy shop.  I just had to admire her courage and gift of life.

I asked her was she going to rebuild in Fallbrook and she said “Yes!”  However, things were moving slowly and the Fire Department had come up with new regulations to make fighting such dreadful blazes more easy.  It also meant thousands more dollars would be added to the price of the new home.  She seemed undaunted … almost matter of fact.  Then she said her husband was a collector and had lost everything in the fire.  But they were going to pick up the pieces and start anew.  Again, I congratulated her on her positive outlook and philosophy and wished her well.

After the three friends departed I sat quietly and reflected on the scene of a few minutes ago.  I was feeling euphoric and then it hit me.  How would I act, or react, if I had just lost my beautiful home and all my possessions?  Would I feel like buying a beautiful, expensive, watercolor with nowhere to hang it?  Would I even be out gallivanting with friends?  I think not.  My reaction would probably be much more somber.

However, I’ve discovered a very important lesson from this experience.  Since then, whenever I’ve felt down in the dumps, disappointed, frustrated, annoyed, or angry at anyone or anything, I’ve thought about the woman who has lost everything she ever loved, bought, or collected in one fell swoop, and how her spirit has remained positive, friendly, and almost childlike!   If she can exhibit such joy and pleasure at life after losing everything, then I can certainly handle the minor, ego-driven things in my life!  She has certainly helped me to put things into perspective and, for that, I am eternally grateful!

REVISTING OCEANSIDE ANNUAL DAYS OF ART

By Shirley M. Carolan

Last year I wrote about the 2-day 15th Annual Art Show in Oceanside, in April, and how inspiring and beautiful this show is featuring artists from all over California.

This year the show was just as exciting and interesting. The overcast skies didn’t deter me from enjoying a wonderful day strolling through the booths and chatting with the artists. If you couldn’t make it to the show this year, this is one event you won’t want to miss next year, so be forewarned to mark your calendars now! Next year’s show will be April 18-19, 2009.

As usual, there was something for everyone from young tots to seniors like myself. There was food, sweets, live music, dancing, in addition to all the wonderful art work from pottery, exquisitely blown glassware, oil paintings, watercolors, mixed media, carvings, etc. I renewed acquaintances with folks and artists that I met last year and beyond. I found the artists so eager to talk about their work and share “secrets” with me. Artists are definitely a different breed of cat from other types of professionals. They seem so laid back and not at all pushy or needy, or hustling you to buy their wares! How refreshing!

I made a beeline for the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League (COAL) booth to say hello to my fellow artists exhibiting there. These wonderful and friendly artists inspired me to join their organization last July and start exhibiting my own work. As a result, I received an “Honorable Mention” for one of my oil paintings this February. I’ve also been appointed as their Public Relations Chairperson.

Next, I sought out I one of my favorite artists, Jacqueline Tyree. Hard to believe this wonderful woman is now 85 and is a living legend. I caught her impish grin and asked her what was new about her work this year. She quickly showed me several canvases where she had used a metallic gold to highlight sea, sky, or beautiful I sandy beaches. The effect was startling and beautiful. She told me “I don’t just paint what I see. I paint a mood!” Now that’s a lesson worth remembering! Her exquisite seascapes of the San Diego coastal area are a joy to behold. She says she’s getting a little too old to be climbing up and down big rocks to descend to the sandy beaches below to begin her paintings.

Jacquie is a member of the San Diego Art Guild and her paintings are on display at “On Track” gallery in Encinitas. Also, you can learn more about her and her paintings can be seen on www.coastalartprints.com . In addition to her beautiful paintings she has photos of her work made into greeting cards. Don’t you know I was the lucky recipient of one of them entitled “Surf’s Up.” She generously placed one in my hand as I started to depart. Jacqueline is just one of the many artists you will enjoy meeting and hopefully going home with a piece of her art.

Another highlight of this annual event is the High School Art Show sponsored by the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League (COAL), my home league. It is truly a spectacular show and hard to believe the artists are all so young. Over 270 pieces of art were on display by high school students from Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista. Judging and awards took place earlier in the month. One of the most popular pieces was the 6’x8’ colored pencil drawing done by 156 students from Mr. Draim’s El Camino Real High School art classes.

I hope I’ve whet your appetite to attend this wonderful Art Show next year, April 18-19, 2009! There is something to please everyone, from watercolors, oil paintings, ceramics, fibers, gourd sculptures, silk paintings, photography, jewelry, pottery, fused glass, wood and stone, etc.
