Personally, I am sick and tired of doctors reminding me of my AGE! Or, being told that my AGE is to blame for such and such. In other words, AGE is the “elephant in the room!” What rubbish! I may be a senior citizen but if I truly believed that I might as well order my coffin now!

Recently, I told two specialists that I’m tired of living at only two speeds: no energy, and low energy. I want to get back physically to walking 2 miles a day without oxygen and without a walker, where I was a year ago before coming down with complications from pneumonia.. One doctor said “Well, that ain’t going to happen!” The other said “Well, you’ve got to remember the elephant in the room!” When I asked him what that was he said “Your AGE!” What a cop out! What rubbish! What a cop out!

I have friends my age and older who play tennis, go sailing, hike, etc. enjoying life and without giving a thought to their age. .You’re as old or as young as you feel! AGE is not the problem when you constantly fall down, lose your balance and break bones, as I have done. The elephant in the room for me has been leading a sedentary life style and not by choice! It’s hard to exercise or run around the block when you feel tired all the time.. It’s obvious that weak muscles are the culprit, not AGE! When you sit all day, whether reading, at your computer, or watching television, your muscles are not being used! Hence, they can atrophy! When you walk, get out of a car, go upstairs, etc. you are using muscles!

I’m doing a lot of research about balance and weak muscles and how to improve both. The world wide web is loaded with information on these subjects. I’m also taking a FREE 6 day Ecourse, with exercises to improve my balance and use my muscles. The course is designed by Mike Ross, along with videos and exercises you can do immediately. Mike is an exercise physiologist who specializes in senior health and fitness. He has a degree in Fitness Management and is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Also, I’m thinking of starting a support group for folks who have trouble with their balance and constantly fall down. While older folks are more likely to respond, it is not limited to them because some younger folks also have balance problems. More on this later.

Lastly, I urge you not to give your power away to AGE, or well meaning folks, or doctors who tell you to “remember the elephant in the room!” That’s their opinion. Thank you very much. What’s yours?

Maybe I’m waxing philosophical as I age because through some unlikely and unsolicited sources I came across some sentences recently whose meanings literally resonated with me. Words are so powerful; they conjure up a variety of emotions and moods. Hence, it’s wonderful when bon mots cause you to stop and think about how you are living your life and see if that’s in accord with your master plan.

I want to share these wonderful words with you now because they may spur you on to do a quick analysis of your life today and see if It t is in sync with your vision.

The first came from Maria Mar’s newsletter (Maria@shamansdance.com) and was part of some promo material for Ted Karam’s new book “Jumping on Water:” ‘Do not give your power away to your circumstances.’ These words literally stopped me dead in my tracks as I reflected on how disappointed and angry I’ve been at myself for not being able to recover from my illness as quickly as I would like. However, I had no idea how debilitating shingles can be. My doctor told me my condition had to do with the “elephant in the room!” When I asked him what that was, he said, “Well, you’ve got to remember you’re not 24 any more. It takes longer for older folks to recover.” H’m, that surely didn’t apply to me, did it?

I never think of my age as a detriment to anything! But, I had wasted an inordinate amount of time and energy bemoaning my poor health. And, sometimes I was aware of that and other times not. I had to admit finally that I had “given my power away (many times) to my circumstances” and that had to stop. I’m not an invalid after all!

On the bright side, however, I congratulated myself for buying a four-wheel walker, with folding seat, lightweight and extremely serviceable, on January 29, 2010. I also bought a nice basket that attaches to the walker and holds my oxygen tank. This may not seem like a big deal to some, but for me it’s better than buying a new car! I was shopping at my favorite thrift shop and spotted it. I decided to take a stroll with it around the store. I was amazed at how much more territory I covered without the usual huffing and puffing when I used the cane. H’m. Next, I thought about shopping in the supermarket and how I get around so well with the shopping cart to help me keep my balance and keep moving.

Then I knew, I had to buy the walker! I said to myself this could mean more freedom for me. Right now I can’t even walk my dog a block with my cane without huffing and puffing and having to return home. Now, Krissy, my little Shih-Tzu, enjoys a ride on the seat the last block before arriving home. As of today, I’m excited to be walking all around my neighborhood. I am up to walking up to a mile a day with my walker and without the oxygen tank! My short term goal is to walk 2 miles a day with the walker, and, without any oxygen. My long term goal is to walk 2 miles daily, as I did before, eventually without the walker or oxygen!

The beauty is that I bought this walker for a song and it’s given me a new lease on life and new found freedom! I can’t help wondering, though, if the doctors had advised me last year, when I first got out of the hospital, to buy a walker would I have done so? Methinks not. Regardless, I am now a master of my destiny instead of a victim of my history!

The other bon mots I feel worth sharing with you came in an e-mail message from a friend with a cartoon. Unfortunately, I am unable to upload the cartoon. Here it is: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain!” Isn’t that beautiful! I was absolutely tickled by it. It conjured up memories of Gene Kelln ey in the movie,“Singing in the Rain.” Regardless of what’s going on in life at any moment, if we can learn to “dance and sing in the rain,” I think we stand a good chance of surviving the worst case scenario. It’s a premise truly worth thinking about!

As you’ve probably guessed, I’ve enlarged both of these wonderful sayings and have posted them near my computer, in my bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, etc. I feel they are great new mantras to live by. Do let me know what you think!

Happiness, or success, means different things to different people and that’s OK. But, little did I realize I would ever equate doing humdrum housework with happiness!! Nay, success!

As many of you know, on August 17, 2009 I broke out in hundreds of brown lesions down my back, half way across my waist, and up over my right breast. I was horrified because I’d never seen anything like it. A week prior, I had felt a “strangling” sensation in my lungs like someone was crushing me to death. On August 14 x-rays gave a different diagnosis. Then on August 18, my doctor finally confirmed I had shingles!

Perhaps you’re bored by hearing this, but nine (9) weeks later I am still suffering the horrible burning/itching and soreness that this disease inflicts 24/7 on its victims. Tomorrow, October 20 I see a nerve specialist to see if he can numb the nerves in my back! I sure hope so because enough is enough!

If you are over 60 I highly urge you to get the “shingles vaccine.” I was offered it earlier this year by my doctor but declined thinking I’d never get that disease! This is one disease you don’t want to get.

Back to my story. Last Thursday, I was determined to do some menial housework like washing my kitchen and bathroom floors! They had not been done since just before my illness and I was ashamed of how dirty they were. (These floors are very tiny, maybe the size of a postage stamp). Nevertheless, it proved a real challenge for me. Also, I had to bend down and lift “stuff” off the floors that I had not been able to put away. Anytime I tried to bend down to pick something up I was in excruciating pain and had to give up!

What would normally take me about 30-45 minutes took me a few hours … I could not keep my oxygen tank on because it was too heavy. Fortunately, I used a product “mop and glow” that did not require any rinsing after applying and also left a nice shine. After cleaning a few squares of linoleum I had to sit down and rest. Hence, it prolonged the project. But my elation upon completion and the sense of true accomplishment were exhilarating!

Now, I go into my kitchen or bathroom and just look at the floors. I am thrilled to see them so clean. And, the beauty is that I did it myself for myself! Nothing can replace the feeling of satisfaction you get when you know you’re not a victim of circumstances! That you can take care of yourself regardless of the situation, even if it may take a little longer..

I forgot to mention that I also vacuumed my living room and dining area same day. Again, I had to take it in stages but it eventually got done.

When somebody comes to visit me now, I am not ashamed if they use the bathroom, or I go into my kitchen and offer them a cup of tea. Ah yes, happiness or success is being able to take care of yourself in your own home when you have the strength and willingness to try.

For example, last week I let go of something and some people who were very dear to me. Something triggered my taking a closer look at the relationship and I knew it had become toxic. I thought it would be painful parting ways but it was not, because I let them go with love.

I realize that everything in the universe is energy and we each vibrate at different energy levels. Sometimes we try to give a gift to a person vibrating at a different energy level from ours and that person cannot accept the gift because they do not see the value in it… alas, because they do not value themselves.

Hence, last week’s action on my part is a gigantic leap forward, a true act of faith! If you’d like to read a wonderful article that came across my computer yesterday, regarding “toxic relationships” by Maria Mar, then please go to David Riklan’s website at www.selfgrowth.com

It is with much joy and gratitude that I am now recuperating at home after spending 10 days at Scripp’s Memorial Hospital, Encinitas, CA. I was diagnosed with complications and pneumonia necessitating I.V.s and oxygen 24-7.

Without going into all the gory details, I feel like I am a far different woman than I was at the beginning of the month. I am much more pro-active where my health is concerned, which the hospital encourages its patients to be. I kept a daily Journal of everything that transpired… the good, bad and the ugly! Hence, you will see some articles from me that are both humorous and poignant.

The articles will offer tips to folks faced with an emergency hospital stay, what to take with you, who to notify, etc. Also, pointers on “How to Behave When Visiting Someone in the Hospital!” Yes, believe it or not, many folks don’t have a clue how to act when visiting a hospital! Some of my suggestions are being forwarded to the head of Scripps in the hopes that some much needed changes will take place for the betterment of patients!

For now, I am ecstatic for the health that I have. I realize I can handle any difficulty/problem or stress if I have good health. Health to me is more important than money, relationships or talent. I can go anywhere in the world and enjoy new sights, sounds, spices and savor the experiences when I have good health. Without good health, I am nothing… a shadow of my former self, perhaps even dependent on the good will of others to care for me…

Folks, take care of yourselves and be pro-active when it comes to your health… you’ll be glad you did!

Also, I started a paper newsletter for my Carlsbad Tick Talk Toastmaster Club, coming up with a title, the “Tick Talk Tatler.” Designing, and laying out columns reflecting the diversity of our club has also been a challenge. I’ve initiated a column entitled “Toastmasters on the Go!” to honor those Toastmasters who are using their public speaking. writing and leadership skills beyond the club level. However, I think the challenge and time expended will pay off for our club in attracting new members, and rewarding current ones. It’s really a great public relations tool and a labor of love!

Artists, using a variety of media, e.g., paints, watercolors, oils, acrylics, sculpture and photography will demonstrate their work and skills. I will be sharing a booth with another artist and displaying some of my oil paintings on Saturday, August 30.
