About Shirley
WELCOME TO MY PERCH !
I live, work and play in beautiful North San Diego County, CA. I am a transplant from London, England via New York and San Francisco.
My interests span public speaking, creative writing, oil painting, caligraphy, animals, and self development, having completed 4 Firewalks with Tony Robbins. My Passion is WORDS! I love the spoken and written word because they are Man’s most precious gift on this planet. Without them, it would be a mute world indeed! My motto is “WORDS are the poetry of the soul. They are as unique as your fingerprints. You owe it to yourself to leave the finest imprint!™”
Over the years, as the economy has changed so have my careers and transferrable skills! My career path is therefore “checkered “ from 30 years in corporate America working with senior management to sales, marketing, antiques, insurance, real estate, the teaching profession and freelance writing with a passion!
In 1981 I joined Toastmasters International and have won many District public speaking, evaluation, and writing awards. I was appointed twice as a District Newsletter Editor for both the San Francisco and San Diego Districts . Over the years I’ve had the joy and privilege of mentoring many men and women with their public speaking and delivery skills. Hence, to me, Toastmasters is a way of life and an opportunity to give back!
A thespian at heart, I made my professional stage debut in 1994 in the British comedy “It Runs in the Family” by Ray Cooney, at the Alterena Playhouse, Alameda, CA.
A published author, my first book immortalizes my beloved Pug-Terrier, “Jake” which humorously and poignantly recounts all the lessons in life this little dog taught me. I’ve said that “Jake is the husband I never had!” My two blogs include “Carolan’s Corner” and “Angels Crossing’” The first deals with articles and hints on public speaking, writing, and self development. The latter covers metaphysical topics and lessons learned from living life.
Serious hobbies and pursuits include oil painting lessons for 7 years from Stephanie Travers of San Diego. The summer of 2007 I joined the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League (COAL). Gradually I started exhibiting my oil paintings. February 2008, I received the Judges “Honorable Mention” award for one of my paintings. I’m still swinging from the chandelier over this. Lastly, in 2008 I was appointed COAL’s Publicity Chairperson and get to write all their press releases, awards, receptions, etc. in addition to meeting well known artists from around the globe.
In a nutshell, that’s what I’m all about. Hence, you will see an eclectic mix of articles and advice on a variety of topics. Thanks for tuning in! WELCOME TO MY PERCH!
